Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect millions of individuals and families across the United States, yet stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to prevention, treatment, and long-term recovery.
Despite decades of research demonstrating that addiction is a chronic, treatable health condition influenced by biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors, many individuals continue to experience judgment, discrimination, and social exclusion because of their substance use history. These negative attitudes often discourage people from seeking help, remaining engaged in treatment, or openly discussing their recovery journey.
Participants will examine how stigma influences every stage of the recovery process. Fear of judgment often prevents individuals from seeking treatment until their condition becomes more severe. Others may discontinue treatment prematurely because they feel ashamed or believe they will be labeled negatively by employers, family members, healthcare professionals, or their communities. Stigma can also contribute to social isolation, increased mental health concerns, lower treatment engagement, and poorer health outcomes.

Pete Nielsen
Pete Nielsen (he/him) is the president and CEO for the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) as well as for the National Behavioral Health Association of Providers (NBHAP).
A longtime executive-leadership trainer for treatment organizations, Pete has spent his career developing the people who run addiction treatment: from front-line supervisors stepping into their first leadership role to the executives who lead the field. He is a national advocate for the addiction workforce, working with lawmakers and agencies to advance the profession. This course distills what he teaches growing leadership teams: develop others, build one team, and hold the standard without losing the relationship.
