Prevention specialists play a vital role in protecting communities by reducing the risk of substance use disorders before they begin. Through education, community collaboration, and evidence-based prevention strategies, these professionals work to strengthen protective factors and reduce risk factors among individuals, families, and communities.

The National Behavioral Health Association of Providers (NBHAP) recognizes prevention specialists as essential contributors to the behavioral health workforce and supports their professional development through education, training, and advocacy.

What is a prevention specialist?

A prevention specialist is a trained professional who focuses on preventing substance misuse and promoting behavioral health and wellness. Prevention specialists use data-driven strategies and community engagement to design and implement programs that address substance use risk factors and promote healthy environments.

Prevention specialists often work in:

  • Schools and school districts
  • Community health organizations
  • Behavioral health agencies
  • Public health departments
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Youth and family service programs
  • Tribal and community coalitions

Their work is proactive and community-focused, aiming to build resilience and support healthy development.
