Buddhism and the 12 Step programs are two powerful spiritual pathways that help end suffering. Practicing spirituality is critical for those in recovery from co-occurring disorders. These can be taken in any order.
In Part 3 of this series, "Compassion", Chris McDuffie helps inform counselors and therapists how to use both sets of teachings to help their clients.
Attendees will learn the following:
- The essential core principle of Buddhism.
- The essential core principles of the 12 Steps.
- How both Buddhism and the 12 Steps inform how to cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity.
- How to practice Mindfulness and Concentration meditations.

Chris McDuffie
Chris McDuffie is a chemical dependency counselor at AToN Center, a 30-day residential detox and treatment center for co-occurring disorders.
Chris is a retired high school principal and holds an MSW from Fordham University. Chris teaches Buddhist psychology, mindfulness, meditation. He is a CADCII, Chemical Dependency Counselor. He's lectured at universities around the world for the University of Illinois' Common Ground Research Network: The University of Vancouver, BC, The University of Amsterdam, The University of Cordoba, Spain and the Sorbonne.
You may find Chris' teaching on the Insight Timer app, where he is the host of Spiritual Sobriety, where he teaches on how to practice Spirituality from a Buddhist and 12 Step perspectives. Chris also has a private practice for corporate and individual counseling.
