The opioid crisis has prompted many to reconsider the extent and effectiveness of our system for addressing addiction. Last year Congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides states with funding for a range of services targeting the crisis. Recovery housing is one of the services authorized under Cures. Recently the National Council for Behavioral Health sent a letter to the heads of all state addiction agencies recommending that they apply some of their new funding to the support of recovery housing systems in their state that have adopted national best practices. The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) is cited in the letter as the preferred best practice standard, and also supports affiliates in many states hard hit by the opioid crisis.

This webinar covers how recovery housing has grown and changed in recent years to become a significant element in the addiction treatment and recovery support field. Topics include emerging state regulatory approaches, service coordination models, reimbursement issues, and other factors that have contributed to the changing landscape for residential addiction and recovery services.

Recovery residences have been part of the addiction recovery landscape for a very long time, and predate residential addiction treatment facilities by many decades. In recent years, they have entered the mainstream of addiction recovery services as the number of residences and variety of service offerings have increased in most parts of the country. Although progress has been uneven, recovery residences are also becoming integrated into larger health care and human service systems. Several factors have come together in recent years to fuel this growth and change. Most recently, the ongoing opioid crisis has focused attention on the need for more safe and recovery-supportive housing.
