I met anxiety at 7, that's when my father beset with alcoholism, depression, and the all-consuming memory that his parents killed themselves at age 48, took his own life by hanging himself with a tie. Trauma for me became an uninvited guest lodged in my memory.

Many of my clients -- young adults, combat veterans, police, firemen, women with chronic pain, men and women who had been molested as a child, or folks who witnessed a catastrophic loss such as September 11, earthquake, fire, etc. -- found their hearts wounded and at a loss because of a traumatic event, family history and other factors. Addiction became their way to numb their pain.

This webinar will describe and demonstrate through case study the interrelatedness of trauma, substance abuse, and mental health. Together we will explore resiliency as a personal act of defiance, emotional elasticity and recovery as keystones to recovery. Evidence based treatment options will be given as ways to mend the wounded heart.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and differentiate trauma as both subjective and objective and how its effects people over the life span.
  • Recognize how trauma can be a precipitating factor which leads to substance abuse and vice versa the activities one engages while in the midst of a substance use disorder can be traumatic.
  • Review research-based strategies (EDMR, experiential, somatic, etc.) which work well with trauma and addiction.
